TODAYS QUOTATION

Friendship… is not something you learn in school. But if you haven’t learned the meaning of friendship, you really haven’t learned anything.
Muhammad Ali

There  is always one thing to remember about Football and that is it creates a team that will always live with you.

I have been fortunate that I have played with some very good Footballers as well as knowing some of them personally, but I have also been fortunate that these people have remained a Football family.

I first met this  man when we were both 12 years old and we then played at school together until the age of 15 when we were both part of the East London side that won the English Schools Trophy in 1966.

While at School and district level he scores over 40 goals each season and was always the main stay of our side

I later played against him a few times when he was at West Ham and was always relieved that he failed to score (mind you I was good !! )

His name is Tony Carr

“I joined in that summer as a 15-year-old apprentice and was bumping into Moore, Hurst and Peters who had just won the World Cup so it was surreal, but at the time you took it for granted,” said Carr.

“The lack of success at England level since then has made it a very big deal.

“Bobby was a great role model and example to young players in terms of the way he conducted himself, the way he trained and everything about him. Everybody looked up to Bobby as the captain, and the man to aspire to.

“I was a very young player and he was the captain of England but he always had time for young players and wasn’t aloof in any shape or form.”

It was perhaps learning this from Bobby Moore that made him Successful.

The parallels between 1966 and 2010 are not lost on Carr, with another academy graduate in Rio Ferdinand set to captain the side, and he said the guiding principles remained the same.

“What you try to do with all the young players is try to give them good habits, on and off the pitch,” he said.

Then over 40 years later we met up again when Bryan, Jake and Myself went to see a youth cup game at Nottingham Forest when West ham were playing,

We had a quick word at pitch side then he had to get on with the match

(He must have forgotten the Balls, first aid and the bottles because someone else took them on later)

We needed a bit of advice on Jakes Football so I contacted Tony as  undoubtedly he runs the best  academy in the Country and you could see why, he took the time to run through and help, but more important told me to keep in touch if he could be of more assistance, and to his word he was there again.

Last Wednesday he had a testimonial match at Upton Park when all the past players from his academy side turned up to play including a visit from Pailo de Canio to play against the current West Ham side.

The reason I am sharing this with you is that he just gave his help and perhaps one-Day Jake will be another that Tony helped to fulfil his football dreams, this is just my way of thanking him in his special week.

I rang him this Morning to congradulate him on his week and again he was showing a genuine interest in Jakes progress .

So when we are all watching the World Cup look at all the players he brought through and now you also have an inside view of the Man who helped to put them there.

Also on the same night Harry Redknapp was taking his side into Europe and I was taking home 3-0 defeat

I suppose 2 out of 3 aint bad

Now you know why you drew the short straw and got me

Setting a goal is not the main thing. It is deciding how you will go about achieving it and staying with that plan.”
- Tom Landry

This Week I will be concentrating on motivation and team spirit,

In the semi Final I set you 3 battles, which were needed to be won before we could even consider, playing in our first final.

1

As I mentioned some of the best teams even at the highest level have a problem in achieving their first Final once this has been over come the sky will be the limit this is solely down to mental strength, I have been working on this all season and you overcome this problem, in the past you would have not come back from being 2-1 down, after completely dominating the game but your will to win was a credit to the whole squad.

2

We then had to overcome a serious problem of the officials for the game, against Willington you were mugged and knowing the same official was again at our semi final could have had a very negative reaction, but you all played with 100% maturity and professionalism which gave you full attention on the game, and playing without any distraction, you should all be very proud of you achievement.

3

The match,

Bryan gave you a game plan, which was the final piece of his 3 matches strategy, all we ask is that if you follow all the instructions and believe in them you will be successful, his plan was spot on and full credit should be shown

Now we are in the Final it is important that this does not take over your thoughts, we have 12 league matches remaining which will be broken down into 12 individual battles and as many individual battles as we think will be needed, our next goal will be to slowly push up the league and win promotion,

You are the best squad in our division, who go into each game with the best information and the best tactics I say this with confidence because in Bryan and Myself you have the best management Team,

You have to have confidence I would not have come into to help last season if I was not confident I could have turned you into a team that was worthy of the hard work put in by the club and Committee, and with Bryan coming through to be the best Manager in the league you will not fail.

We have shown you that team work off the pitch is essential, now all we need is team work on the pitch and I promise you that the highs you felt after the semi-final win will be small compared with what is to come

THAT IS A FACT

It will be difficult over the remainder of the season but I will be giving you all the information that is needed to cope mentally with the challenge

Tomorrow personal motivation

Still to put a name on a cup

Looking back to our last game against Whittington got me thinking of the relief they had when the final whistle went, you cannot take anything away from them on the day they played very well but they knew that they were fortunate to come away with all 3 points. After going 2-0 up they considered the hard work was done, but they never accounted for the way we fight back and our team spirit. Whittington will not be looking forward to the game as much as we are; there strength is in midfield where they out numbered us but not out fault. They have a very good Manager who has taken this side through from Boys to Sunday Morning Football, Bryan and Myself are looking forward to this challenge and we are confident in you all to as always to take on board what we ask from you and not only deliver but give more. Whittington believe that we are just a physical side “ I wouldn’t like to disappoint them “ but we have to get the mix right, against Moira the balance was perfect, when you play football there is not a team in the League that can live with you. As we have spoken before they are just an obstacle in the way of our progression into the Semi Final. Apart from our own game plan I need you all to pull out all your previous experiences from Cup games. Whittington will have two pressures to deal with 1 Raising their game to the same level as last time they played us 2 The added pressure of a qtr Final As we know this is only 90 minutes of Football let them play the Occasion we will just play THE GAME

Our only Pressure is we still have to put Kevs name on a Cup

DONT LET WHITTINGTON GET IN THE WAY

Dave

Telford 3- 3 Greenfield Royal Oak

On reflection it proves how far we have come in our preseason Training and Friendlies, On Sunday we faced a very good side that would probably would have beat us last  season, we are further ahead than I had planned and everyone should be very proud, there are a few problems that we need to address, where we are too quiet off the ball, to make our passing game more successful we need to give our self more options off the ball and make it easier for the player in possession to choose passing options

I tried today to play a few out of position to asses the options available if and when we are short through injury and suspension, there were no positions where I was disappointed with the commitment shown.

The small squad I am more than happy with.

I the last 15 minutes when Bryan came off injured it was easy to move players around with out disturbing the shape.

I know we are heading in the right direction when a few of you are disappointed in your own performance and as far as I was concerned there were no problems its great to see your own personal standards raising, and also the encouragement shown to each other, I have no right to be disappointed in the result but with the standards you are reaching it was a game we should have won, but that is in no way a criticismin of the     performance you have set you own higher Standards.

As I said breifly after the game we have now got to learn to kill games off when we are in the lead with minutes to go, but that is very easy to learn.

On todays  game again we came from behind to score 3 good goals and the attacking performance was outsatnding with Luke scoring 2 and Darren opening up the attack, Dean shown some very good touches and will prove to be a valuable asset with Tyso causing problems with his pace.

Well done to all of you

Dave
